Rent Supplement

The Rent Supplement Program helps low-income households to live in private-sector rental dwellings or dwellings belonging to housing cooperatives or non-profit organizations, and to pay a rent similar to that for low-rental housing, i.e. rent equal to 25% of their income.

Eligibility

A number of criteria, including income, are used to establish eligibility. However, some people, in exceptional circumstances, may be given priority over the waiting list. They include domestic violence victims and people whose homes have been accidentally destroyed.

Available assistance

The amount payable in rent for the dwelling is equal to 25% of the household’s total income for the calendar year prior to the signing of the lease. It includes heating costs. The Rent Supplement covers the difference between the portion payable by the tenant (25% of the household’s income) and the rent agreed upon with the landlord.

However, additional amounts may be added to cover electricity and parking expenses, depending on the services included in the lease.

At this time, new Rent Supplement grants are being allocated only for dwellings in the AccèsLogis Québec Program.

To take advantage of the Program

The Société d’habitation du Québec provides partial funding for the Program, in cooperation with its partners. People wishing to take advantage of the Program should apply to a housing bureau, cooperative or non-profit organization in their region.
