The Shelter Allowance Program provides supplementary financial assistance of up to $80 per month for low-income households that must spend too much of their income on housing.

Eligibility

You qualify for the Program if:

• You are aged 54 or over and live alone.
• You are in a couple where one of the partners is aged 54 or over.
• You are a member of a low-income family with at least one dependent child.

The Program is intended for:

• homeowners
• tenants
• rooming house occupants
• anyone sharing a dwelling with other people

You do not qualify for the Program if:

• You live in low-rental housing or in a government-funded health and social services institution.
• You receive a rent supplement or another direct housing subsidy.
• You have property or cash valued at more than $50,000 (excluding the value of your home, land, furniture and car).

Available assistance

The Shelter Allowance is calculated yearly and paid each month by cheque or direct deposit. The allowance may be granted in the month following receipt of your application form by Revenu Québec.

The monthly amount takes into account:

• the number of people in your household
• the type of household
• your income
• your monthly rent
